What is the Process of Getting Dental Implants?
Dental implants in North Tampa are synthetic tooth roots that can be used to replace missing or damaged teeth. They are anchored in the jawbone, which heals around the implant in the process called osseointegration. Dental implants can provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
Steps for Dental Implants
Damaged Tooth Removal
If a tooth is damaged so badly that your dentist can’t save it, then the best option is to remove the tooth and place an implant to help with the bone in your jaw. Your dentist will cut the gum to expose the tooth root, and then the tooth is removed. The space where the tooth was is now where an implant will be placed to help build new bone in your jaw.
If your jawbone is not strong enough to support a tooth, your dentist will first perform a jawbone reduction surgery to reshape your jawbone to allow the placement of an implant. This process is called an augmentation procedure. If you have had a bone graft, it will be removed from another part of your body and added to form new bone in your jaw.
Dental Implant Placement
The next step is to place the implant into your jaw. Your dentist will drill a hole into your jawbone and place the titanium implant. Once the implant is in place, the bone around it will grow stronger.
It will take several months for the jawbone to fully heal around the implant.
Bone Growth and Healing
Once the implant is healed, your dentist can then place a permanent crown on top of the implant. This phase will give you your new tooth, which looks and feels like a natural tooth. A crown is a cap that is placed on top of the implant to protect it and is covered with healthy, living bones.
It looks just like how your natural tooth would look, so no one will ever know you had implants.
Artificial Tooth Placement
Once the natural tooth and the implant are fully healed, we will take a mold of your teeth and make a custom-made artificial tooth. It can be a single tooth or several teeth, called implant-assisted prosthodontics. These teeth are made from porcelain or a composite of materials, and they may have an overlay on top of them to make them look real.
