Is It Good to Chew Gum?

Chewing gum after meals can help rinse and neutralize acids released by plaque bacteria, which are harmful to tooth enamel. However, this practice is beneficial, as long as the gum is sugar-free. In addition, if the sweetener it contains is Xylitol, it can reduce the number of bacteria that cause tooth decay. Increased saliva flow not only neutralizes acids in the mouth, but also removes food particles, which helps keep teeth clean.

Can Chewing Gum Replace Brushing Your Teeth?

Definitely not. Chewing gum should be used as a complement to help remove plaque stains from our teeth by chewing. Chewing gum is not toothpaste and therefore its function should be to support the brushing and never replace it. For that reason, actions such as chewing gum after eating, especially at times when it’s impossible for us to brush our teeth immediately, can be a good remedy to get out of the way.

When Is It Advisable Not to Chew Gum?

Although chewing sugarless gum can be beneficial in most cases, there are some in which it’s not recommended, such as when there’s pain in the jaw or symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder. Excessive chewing, especially if we wear braces or dental veneers, can be harmful because of the adherence to metallic elements.
