Dental implants in North Tampa have been one of the great innovations in dentistry in the last 30 years. However, patients don’t know how to maintain them and aren’t aware that if they’re not properly taken care of, they can cause problems just like a natural tooth. When implants don’t receive the proper care, it can lead to several oral health consequences that are worth mentioning. Here we show you some of them.

What Are the Consequences?

One of the first things that can go wrong is that bacteria can accumulate. These bacteria release toxins and cause the tissues that support the implant, the tooth and the gum, to swell. In the beginning, this inflammation can be reversible if it’s treated properly with specialists, we can stabilize the inflammation and the bleeding in the gums.

Peri-implantitis

If an infection establishes in the area where the implant is inserted, toxins continue to enter, affecting the jawbone. Also, the bone will corrode (pre-implantitis). Over time, this can cause the implant to lose stability, loosen, and ultimately fall. People who smoke have a higher probability to suffer from this, as well as people who already have pyorrhea or those who don’t clean or brush their teeth regularly.

Implants Aren’t Indestructible

Although dental implants are artificial and outstanding choice, they aren’t that different from natural teeth. They should be cleaned and maintained as regularly as if they were natural. If you see any inflammation in the gums or deterioration in the implant it can be solved, but if the problem isn’t identified in time, it can progress and lead to bone loss, which in the end would require extra surgery.
